Achieve Anything by Embracing Rejection
Let’s face it – no one likes being rejected, but it’s a part of life. Whether you were passed up for a job, denied acceptance to a school or program, or turned down when you asked someone on a date, the initial feeling of rejection is terrible. The world would be a better place if people weren’t rejected, but everyone deals with it at some point in life.
Luckily, once you move past the first negative feelings, you can actually benefit from rejection. If you choose to make the most out of an unfortunate situation, being rejected can make you a stronger person in several ways.
HERE ARE 6 POSITIVE QUALITIES YOU CAN BRING INTO YOUR LIFE BY EMBRACING REJECTION:
After you experience rejection, you have two options: give up or work harder. People with a true desire to reach their goals almost always decide to work harder. Rejection isn’t a sign that you’ve made a mistake, but it is a sign that there’s always room for improvement. Being turned down is one of the greatest motivators to do better in the future.
You may have to do something new, stop doing something you’re currently doing, or just make a slight change to your approach. Rejection is one of the best ways to motivate yourself to keep working hard and making improvements. Some of the world’s biggest scientific discoveries were initially rejected, but the scientists stayed motivated and kept pushing their ideas.
It’s easy to start to feel like you’re the center of the universe or the star of your own movie, and sometimes everyone needs to feel rejection to be knocked down a peg. If you always win every competition, receive every recognition, and are given every opportunity, it might go to your head. A big ego is dangerous in a business environment, and it can ruin social relationships. Being turned down is a great reminder that we’re all just human—even you.
Humility is an important quality in anyone. While it’s important to be confident in your abilities and have hope for your success in the future, you should always remember that you’re not perfect and everyone makes mistakes occasionally. People who have experienced rejection typically remember this much better than people who have easily found success.
After you face rejection, it’s the perfect time to practice self-reflection. Being able to evaluate your emotions, your goals, and your strengths and weaknesses is a valuable quality and essential to achieve success. Because most people either become emotional or overthink the situation after being rejected, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on your behavior. You should make sure you’re in a positive mindset, though, and avoid making any big career or personal decisions while you’re upset.
While the feeling of rejection is still fresh in your mind, ask yourself some questions: How do you feel about the rejection? Is this missed opportunity important enough for you to try for it again? What can you do differently next time? What are your strengths that can benefit you, and what are your weaknesses that you should try to improve upon?
Sometimes you have to take a new approach to succeed after rejection. The old adage, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result,” is usually true. If you were rejected once, you should probably try to change at least one aspect of your plan or approach to try to achieve success in your next attempt.
You may have to get creative to think of a new approach. Creativity and innovation are great skills for anyone to have, especially in the business world. You should be able to think of multiple solutions to a problem and multiple plans to reach your goal.
As another saying goes: “Good things come to those who wait”. Although most people wish it wasn’t true, it’s the reality in many situations. Sometimes you have to wait months, years, or even decades before reaching your goal. J.K. Rowling was rejected several times by publishers before one accepted Harry Potter, and now she is one of the most well-known authors in the world. Being rejected is a great reminder that success takes time and patience.
Some people give up after waiting a while, and others practice perseverance. Those who are patient and persevere always make it further than people who give up, and many finally achieve their goals after years of hard work and dedication.
Rejection can sometimes open new doors for other opportunities. If an employer chooses someone else instead of you for a position, they may keep you in mind for a different position. If someone rejects your business proposal, you can use it as an opportunity to make changes to your idea. If you are denied from a school or educational program, it may lead you to apply for something else that you end up enjoying even more.
Whether you choose to continue pursuing the same goal or you choose to follow a new path, you can always find new opportunities, some of which may occur as a direct result of your rejection.
If you experience rejection, it’s never a reason to give up trying. Countless people have been rejected before eventually finding success. Rejection doesn’t necessarily mean you are following the wrong path or have made a mistake. Instead of giving up, you should use the experience as a learning opportunity. It’s natural to feel upset or frustrated, but if you also see the positive side to rejection, you can keep trying until you succeed.
